My pick for the best coffee grinder machine Australia 2021

Don’t have time to read my entire best domestic coffee grinder reviews and just want to hear my recommendation?

Well I just love the Breville Smart Grinder Pro.  It is what I use at home, every day.

This grinder comes with quality stainless steel conical burrs, has a decent size bean hopper and 60 different settings so you’ll be able to brew coffee for all your friends and family just the way they like it.

Why purchase a coffee grinder anyway?

As any barista will tell you, coffee tastes so much better when the coffee beans are ground immediately before brewing.  And when I say immediately, I mean right before you brew your coffee, not the day before or an hour before, but immediately before.

The reason you want to have your coffee beans ground just prior to use in your coffee machine, is that the coffee bean flavour starts to change as soon as they are ground.

When the coffee grounds meet oxygen, they begin to take on heat, moisture and other aromas resulting in changes to their flavour.  So for the best tasting coffee, it is essential to grind your coffee just before brewing.

So if you’re looking for ways to get that café tasting coffee in your own home, a good coffee grinder is an essential tool to pair with your coffee machine.

Best grind size for different coffee types

Another reason a coffee grinder is a great tool at home is that different brewing methods require different grind sizes.  So if you buy pre ground coffee you really are limiting your options when it comes to the brewing methods you can use it for.

Here is a quick guide to some of the more popular coffee brewing methods and the perfect grind sizes:

French Press: The french press method requires medium to coarse coffee grounds as fine grounds tend to get through the mesh into your cup.

Aeropress: A wide range of grind sizes work with this brewing method, but somewhere around a medium grind size is best.

Pour Over and Chemex: For the pour over method, in most cases a medium grind is best.

Automatic Drip: With drip coffee, a medium to fine grind size works best – however this will depend on the shape of the filters and filter basket used.

Cold Brew: Given cold brew coffee requires grounds to be steeped in cold water for at least 12 hours, a coarse setting is best. A finer grind size would result in an over extracted brew plus make it hard to filter the grounds from your brew.

Stovetop / Moka Pot: A fine-medium grind is best for coffee brewed in a moka pot.

Espresso: As espresso machines extract the coffee through pressure, it is essential that fine grounds are used, or the coffee cannot be brewed properly. If you used larger grounds the shots will be under extracted as they run too fast through the ground coffee.

Percolator: A coarse grind is best for percolated coffee due to the filter system. Avoid fine grounds as they will end up in your cup.

Things to consider when buying the best home coffee grinder

When it comes to buy coffee grinder, there are some great options on the market, but there really is no best coffee grinder in the world, as everyone has their own individual preferences.

To purchase the best rated coffee grinder that is simply perfect for you, consider the following factors.

1. Types of coffee grinders

The first thing you will need to decide is whether to get a blade coffee grinder or a burr coffee grinder and then choose between ceramic or stainless steel.

Blade or burr coffee grinder

When it comes to the best home coffee bean grinder, you want a consistent grind.  Unevenly ground coffee results in under or over extraction and a weak tasting brew.

While the best coffee burr grinder tends to be much more expensive than everyday blade grinders, burr grinders produce a perfect, consistent grind every time.  With a good quality burr grinder, you can expect consistency in terms of the grind size across all the grind particles.

Some of the best budget coffee grinder options may have blade grinders.  This type of grinder uses propellers to slice up the coffee beans into a fine grind.  The main disadvantages with a blade grinder is that they tend to heat the grounds (not great for flavour) and they don’t tend to create a consistent grind size.

If you decide to go with a burr grinder (and I recommend you do), you’ll also need to choose between a flat burr grinder or conical burr coffee grinder. A conical grinder has two cone shaped burrs with ridges that grind and crush the coffee, whereas a flat burr grinder has two sets of serrated rings of burrs.

Flat plate burrs come on all sorts of grinders from cheap to top quality, whereas as the conical burr grinders are usually found on the lower speed grinders. Top quality steel flat burrs are found on commercial grade grinders and some of the best home coffee grinder options.

Ceramic or stainless-steel coffee grinder

The best ceramic coffee grinder options available tend to be longer lasting given they don’t rust or deteriorate when exposed to heat and moisture. However, having said that they don’t do well under sharp and sudden impacts such as any knocks to the machine or any foreign bits. Many coffee lovers claim that ceramic grinders create a better, more traditional, and better tasting coffee.

These days most grinders are made from stainless steel. Stainless steel is corrosion resistant, doesn’t rust when exposed to moisture. However, unlike ceramic, they do tend to be more affected by hot environments which shortens their lifespan overall. Also note that some cheaper stainless steel grinders will lose their overall sharpness much quicker than ceramic grinders.

2. Manual or automatic (electric) grinder

You’ll also need to decide whether you prefer a manual coffee bean grinder or an automatic / electric coffee bean grinder.

A manual grinder (or otherwise referred to as a hand grinder) operates with a hand crank.  Read any of the best hand coffee grinder reviews and you’ll that these are much quieter than an electric grinder, cheaper and more portable.

So they are great if you’re after a portable coffee grinder to take to the office with you or when travelling.  A hand crank grinder is also so much easier to clean as they have fewer parts. A manual coffee grinder is a great gift idea for coffee lovers too.

If you want your coffee beans ground, with minimal effort on your behalf, then the best automatic coffee grinder is the way to go.  A coffee grinder – electric operated – works easily with a flick of the switch, but they do tend to be more expensive than a coffee bean hand grinder.

3. Number of grind settings

Whether you’re after a coffee and spice grinder, the best coffee grinder for espresso or some other brew, it’s a good idea to get a grinder with several grind settings.

An adjustable coffee grinder with a range of settings will allow you to make great coffee for friends and family who might like different types of coffee brews, or even when you’re up for experimenting a little with your brews yourself.

4. Hopper size

When it comes size, you will need to consider the size of the bean hopper (this relates to how much coffee you can grind at once).

When considering serving size, think about how many cups of coffee you’re likely to be brewing at once.  If you generally make espresso coffee for a few people at once, the best personal coffee grinder could be smaller than if you need to grind a larger batch for an automatic drip coffee maker.

5. Grinder size

How much space do you have in the kitchen for your grinder?  The best coffee hand grinder Australia offers takes up next to no space at all, while some of the electric grinders can be a bit bulkier.

Be sure to consider this, to avoid getting your grinder home, only to realise you don’t have enough bench space.

6. Ease of use and cleaning

In terms of how easy a grinder is to use, there is quite a range of differences between grinders.  While some grinders have lots of buttons and dials to allow for a custom settings, other machines come with automatic settings which makes it super easy to use.

Grinders which have LCD displays are usually easiest to use as they let you know what settings have been activated to avoid too many mistakes.

Make sure you have an idea of what will be involved in cleaning before you buy it, so you know how involved the process will be.  The more features and components the grinder has, the more likely it will be harder to clean.
