Things To Consider When Buying The Best Airtight Coffee Container

When it comes to the best containers for coffee, there are some great options on the market, but not all containers will protect your coffee beans equally.

To purchase the best coffee container that is perfect for you, consider the following factors.

If you know what features to look for, click here to skip straight to the reviews.

Size

For super fresh coffee, you’re best to buy coffee beans in small batches, just enough to last a week or two at the most.

However, the amount one household might need for a week will not be the same as another.  If you’ve got a large household full of coffee drinkers, you’ll need a lot more coffee than a small household with just the one.

So take some time to consider how much coffee beans you need to store and then purchase a container that’s large enough.

Storage containers come in a range of different sizes, from small to large coffee storage containers storing from 250g to 1 kilogram of beans.  So no matter how big or small the coffee bean bag size is, there will be the perfect sized container.

Also consider if you have more than one type of coffee to store. If you have ground and whole beans, decaf or different roasts, you will want a few coffee canisters to store your coffee.

Material

Like any type of storage canisters, the best coffee storage canisters are made from all kinds of materials.

You can get a glass coffee container, ceramic coffee container, stainless steel coffee container or plastic coffee container.  Each material has its advantages and disadvantages.

  • Stainless Steel:  Super durable, blocks out the sunlight and is non porous, so it won’t trap in the coffee oils or stain as some other materials do.  A stainless steel coffee storage container is one of the more expensive options though.
  • Glass: Looks fantastic, non porous, so won’t trap in the coffee oils or stain as some other materials do. The downside to glass is that it’s fragile and clear, meaning coffee is exposed to sunlight, so it should always be stored in the cupboard.  A glass coffee bean container can also be expensive.
  • Plastic:  Plastic is one of the cheapest materials and can be more durable than some materials.  Containers made from plastic are also usually made with a solid colour and so block out sunlight.  The main downside with plastic is it is a porous material and so the coffee oils can stain it.  Plastic also tends to crack over time, so it’s not long lasting.
  • Ceramic:  Ceramic is lightproof and non porous so it won’t stain with coffee oils.  The downside to a ceramic coffee bean storage container is they aren’t the best at being airtight, are fragile and often more expensive than containers made from other material.

Degass Valve

Once coffee beans are roasted, gases, mostly carbon dioxide (CO2), start seeping out and it’s important the gas has a way of escaping.  This is why the best coffee bean container will often feature a degassing valve

The one-way vent allows the beans to release CO2 slowly and other gases without the beans coming into contact with the air outside.  A coffee beans container with a degassing valve will prolong the freshness and quality of the beans.

Particularly if have a coffee roaster machine and roast coffee at home, containers with degass valves are essential.

Airtight Seal

Coffee starts to lose its flavour when it’s exposed to oxygen which is why it’s super important to have an airtight container for coffee.

By storing your beans in an airtight coffee storage container, you’re preventing any air from coming into the container and preserving the flavour and natural taste of the coffee.

While airtight seals prevent air from coming inside the container, they don’t remove the air that is already inside – this is the job of air removal containers or a vacuum seal coffee container.

Unlike a coffee vacuum seal container, an air removal container won’t suck out the air. Rather it pushes out the air when the lid is pushed down on top of the beans.

An air removal container removes more air than simply an airtight container but not as much as a vacuum coffee container.

If your beans are stored for a week or so, a coffee airtight canister is all you really need.  A coffee vacuum storage container or air removable container is more important if the beans are stored for a week or more.

Opacity

Coffee beans should not be exposed to light as this diminishes the taste of the coffee.  As such clear containers should be avoided, with tinted or opaque airtight coffee storage containers the preferred option.

If you do opt for a clear container for coffee, then you’ll need to ensure your coffee is stored in a dark cupboard as much as possible.

Date Tracker

One of the best airtight coffee bean container options are those that come with a date tracker.  They are particularly handy if you are not a daily coffee drinker and beans last longer than a couple of weeks in your house.

A date tracker is a great way to remind you how long the coffee beans have been stored.  Simply set the date tracker when you put in a new bag of beans and keep an eye on this date as the beans are used.

If you’re getting through your beans in a week or two, then a date tracker is not really that important.  However, if you’re just an occasional coffee drinker or keep fresh beans on hand for visitors then a date tracker is a handy tool to have.

Price

If you’re drinking coffee regularly and get through your coffee beans fast, the shorter the time they’re stored, and so you won’t need to buy anything overly expensive to protect the beans.

However, for those occasional coffee drinkers or those that only keep coffee beans in the home for visitors, then you’re going to be storing coffee beans for a lot longer and need to work harder keeping them fresh.

In this case, the upfront investment for the best coffee bean canister you can afford is worth it.

Probably one of the highlights of this coffee container is its seal which creates a partial vacuum seal.  Activated with the press of a button, the air in the lid is removed creating a seal.

This means as well as protecting the beans from the air outside the container, they are protected on the inside too.  In addition, it has a two way valve that allows the CO2 from the beans to escape slowly.

This particular size can store up to 500g of beans but there are other smaller and larger sizes available too.

  • Easy one press mechanism

Cons

A highlight of the Airscape Kilo is its clever lid that has a one way valve. As as the inner lid is pushed down into the canister the air is dispelled out of the container.

This means air is kept well away from the coffee beans ensuring the flavour remains at its best.  The top lid is BPA free clear plastic, so you can easily keep track of the beans you have left.

Another fabulous looking and great quality coffee container is the Fellow Atmos.  I also own one of these containers and love the smaller size, which is easier to move on and off the shelf than the large Airscape.

Made from durable stainless steel, this canister has a large 1.2 litre capacity (suitable for 450g of coffee) and comes in various colours.  It’s the perfect option if you’re after the best vacuum sealed coffee container.

It comes in two smaller sizes, 0.4L and 0.7L, but the 1.2L capacity container really is the best for coffee beans.

The Fellow Atmos features a unique integrated pump that not only prevents air from getting in, it also removes any air that’s inside the container.

Simply twist the lid back and forth to suck out the air and keep an eye on the vacuum lock indicator.

When the dot drops to reveal a green ring, the vacuum seal is now locked securely in place.  To release, simply push the button and it will release the vacuum and the lid will open easily.

Airscape coffee storage container filled with coffee beans with bag of coffee beans alongside.

The vacuum seal will remain in place for around a week if left unopened.  So if you’re not drinking coffee every day, it’s worth resealing at least once a week.  However, this is unnecessary for daily coffee drinkers as you’ll be resetting the seal each day.

The unique lid design ensures your coffee beans or grounds are securely stored away from light, air and moisture and you can rest assured that your coffee beans will remain almost as fresh as the day you bought them.

Pros

  • Robust stainless steel design
  • Handy vacuum indicator to show when sealed

Cons

  • Seal needs to be resealed every 4 or 5 days
  • Takes quite a few twists of the lid to seal the container
