My Top Picks For The Best Espresso Tamper 2024

If you don’t have time to read my entire espresso tamper review guide, check out these top recommendations below.

Best Calibrated Tamper: Espro Calibrated Tamper

The Espro calibrated tamper has been designed to provide 30 pounds of tamping pressure every time.

The Espro has a great classic look with a black aluminium handle and a stainless steel base.

Plus it comes in a range of sizes from 49mm to 58mm and the option of a convex or flat tamper base.

Best Dual Tamper: Matow Dual Tamper And Distributor

The Matow Dual Tamper and Distributor is perfect for those wanting a single tool for distributing and tamping grounds in portafilters that are 53 or 54mm wide.

The Matow has a 53mm diameter and is easy to use – just twist it three times to achieve evenly spread grounds.

Then flip it over and use the flat base palm tamper to pack the grounds in tightly.  It also has an adjustable depth, so before use, you can set both the distributor and tamper side to the desired depth.

Best Budget Coffee Tamper: Omgogo Coffee Tamper

The Omgogo tamper is a great tamper at an affordable price.

You can choose between 4 sizes – 49, 51, 53 or 58mm. The tamper is made from stainless steel and you have a choice of an aluminium or wood handle.

It has a flat base, so perfect for getting an even level of compacted coffee grounds. The Omgogo is a great price for everyday use.

What Is A Coffee Tamper?

So what is a coffee tamper? Well, it’s a small, lightweight espresso accessory used to pack or “tamp” espresso grounds firmly into the portafilter.

Unless your machine has an automatic coffee tamper, an espresso tamper is one of the most important coffee tools for your home barista coffee kit.

Tamping is a really important part of the coffee making process because if you don’t tamp, you’ve basically got a loose pile of grounds in your portafilter, which doesn’t make for a great coffee.

The size of the tamper needs to closely match the size of the portafilter to be most effective.

For a full flavoured espresso, you want the water to force its way slowly through tightly compacted coffee grounds.

This draws more flavour from the coffee beans, helps create espresso crema and results in a more balanced and flavoured espresso coffee.

If the coffee grounds remain loose, the water will just pour right through when the shot is pulled.

Difference Between A Coffee Tamper And Coffee Distributor (Leveller)

So now you know what is an espresso tamper, you might be wondering, if that’s the same as a coffee distributor (also often called a coffee leveller)?  Well no, they are different tools and used for different purposes.

A coffee distributor or leveller distributes or levels the coffee evenly in the portafilter – it does not compact the grounds.

So while having the best espresso distribution tool is a great idea, it is not used in place of a coffee tamper.  In fact, generally in a coffee tamper kit – you’ll get both.

That being said, some of the best coffee distribution tool options on the market have dual sides and do such a great job of both evenly levelling and compacting that you could easily get away without needing both tools.

At the end of the day, in terms of coffee leveler vs tamper and whether you need both will really depend on:

  • How precisely you want to even out the grounds
  • The individual distributor or tamper features
  • How compact you want to make the grounds in the portafilter.

Most home baristas make do with just a coffee tamper, whereas many café baristas will have both tools.

Coffee Tamper Sizes and How to Choose the Right One

There are several different coffee tamper sizes and it’s super important to ensure you purchase the right one.

Portafilters come in a range of sizes, most commonly from 48 to 58 mm.

Many commercial coffee machines and the best home coffee machines use a 58mm portafilter, but many smaller espresso machines also have smaller portafilters.

You’ll need a tamper that is equal to or slightly smaller than the size of the portafilter.

Ideally, there should be just a little extra space between the tamper and portafilter.

To choose the perfect sized tamper, check the machine user manual as it will normally state the diameter of the portafilter and/or filter baskets.

If not, measure the exact size of the inside diameter of the portafilter and purchase a tamper up to 0.75mm smaller.

Common coffee tamper sizes for popular espresso machine brands and models are listed in the table below.

Things To Consider When Choosing The Best Coffee Tamper

Tampers come in all shapes, sizes, weights and colours, and you’ll need to consider all these factors when choosing the perfect tamper.

To help get you started, below we’ve covered a range of factors and what you need to consider to purchase the ideal tamper.

If you know what you need, click here to skip straight to the reviews.

Size (Dimensions)

We’ve talked about the different espresso tamper sizes above, so you now understand that it is vital that you know the size of your portafilter before considering what size tamper you need.

Too big and the tamper won’t fit inside the portafilter, while too small and you won’t get evenly compacted grounds.

Shape – Flat vs Convex Tamper

The two most common tamper bases are either flat or convex.  As the name suggests:

  • A flat tamper is completely flat on the bottom
  • The base of the convex tamper has a subtly rounded base.

Flat tampers

A flat based tamper is the most common type of coffee tamper.

With a flat tamper, it’s important to ensure the entire base comes in contact with the coffee grounds evenly.  You need to be careful to press directly down and not to favour one side over the other. If you do, the water will flow through one side, resulting in a poorly extracted shot.

Convex Tampers

Convex tampers are less common in the home tamper market, but popular with baristas and professional coffee houses.

When using a convex base tamper, you press down and slightly rock the tamper side to side.

This causes the grounds to be pushed down and out to the side a little. This is believed to create a better seal between the grounds and the edge of the portafilter.  This ensures the water won’t easily escape down the sides (channelling) and bypass the grounds.

This is a contentious issue amongst the home brewers community and there is nothing definitive proven.

In terms of flat vs convex tamper – it really is an individual choice as to what you prefer.  Provided you’ve got an excellent and consistent tamping technique, a flat base is considered best to ensure a flat and even distribution.

The size of the tamper, and ensuring it snuggly fits in the portafilter, will have more of an impact on the quality of the puck than the base shape.

Handle (Shape And Material)

Most tampers resemble an old fashioned rubber stamp, with the handle generally made from either metal or wood.

The shape of the handles can differ in shape, with some being longer than others, or some with a more rounded top, while others have a flatter top.

You can also get dual sided tampers, which look like a tiny dumbbell, with different size tampers on either side.

Puck style tampers (also known as a palm tamper) are also becoming more popular – these look just like a distributor or leveller and tend to be easier to hold and push down, creating a more level surface.

As to what handle style is best – well, that usually comes down to the size of your palm and what you consider is more comfortable and easier to use.

Tamper Weight

To get a good amount of pressure when tamping the coffee grounds, you don’t want a tamper that’s too light. The plastic tampers that often come with espresso machines are a good example of these.

The heavier the tamper, the easier it is to ensure your grounds are adequately compacted.  On the other hand, you don’t want it so heavy that it is uncomfortable to use, as this won’t provide good results either.

For this reason, don’t buy a plastic coffee tamper, rather opt for a good quality tamper made from a solid material such as stainless steel.

Calibrated Tampers

With a calibrated tamper, there is a slight gap between the handle and base so that when you press down on the handle, it connects with the base and clicks, providing 30 pounds of pressure (considered to be the ideal pressure for tamping).

The best calibrated espresso tamper is perfect for those just starting out with their barista skills or those simply wanting to ensure a consistent result every time.

With a calibrated coffee tamper, you’re not relying solely on your own weight and pressure, rather the tamper provides the ideal pressure each time.

Tamper Cost

The price of tampers range from $10 or so, right up to more than $100 – and all price points in between.

So for a good quality tamper, you’ll probably expect to pay more than $30.
