Things to consider when buying the best latte art jug

When it comes to the best frothing pitcher for latte art, there are some great options on the market.

However, to purchase a latte milk jug that is perfect for you, it’s recommended that you consider the following factors.

If you know the features you need, click here to skip to the reviews.

Shape and width

One of the most important ingredients for making impressive latte art is microfoam.

Microfoam is finely textured milk, which is velvety and smooth and essential for creating those latte masterpieces.  So what’s microfoam got to do with the shape and width of the steam milk jug you buy – well everything!

To create microfoam, you need a hot milk jug with a wide base, allowing enough space to make a small whirlpool as you steam the milk.

It is the action of the whirlpool that creates the microfoam as it stretches the sugars in the milk, breaks down the bubbles in the milk, evenly heating the milk and ensuring it’s well aerated.

If the latte jug is too narrow, there won’t be enough room for the steaming wand and the ability to create a whirlpool.

The best jug for latte art has a nice wide bottom, with a slightly narrower opening at the top of the jug.  This will enable you to create perfect velvety microfoam and provides more control when pouring the milk to create the latte art.

Jug capacity

When it comes to choosing your pitcher latte art jug, you’ll want to consider how much milk you need to steam at any given time.  So think about how many coffees you’re likely to be brewing and how much milk you’ll need per cup.

Once you know how much milk you need at any given time, you’ll be able to determine what is the best size milk frothing jug.

When considering coffee milk jug sizes, it’s important to note that if you need 350ml of milk, you’ll need to buy milk jug with a capacity of around 500ml because you can’t fill the pitcher to the very top

You need space within the pitcher for the increase in volume that results when you create the microfoam.

When it comes to latte art pitchers, bigger is not always better. The larger the jug, the more power you need in the steam wand to create silky microfoam.

It’s important not to have a milk jug either too big or too small.  If the jug is too empty, you won’t be able to submerge the steam wand fully.  If it’s too full, then the milk will overflow when creating the microfoam.

A good rule of thumb is for two regular size lattes, you’ll need around 350ml of milk and to obtain 350ml of velvety microfoam, you’ll need a jug with a capacity of around 500ml.

If you are making a single cup, a small coffee milk jug with a capacity of around 350ml is plenty. See the table below.

Coffee Size Number of Coffees Jug Size
Regular (160 ml)1350 ml
Regular (160 ml)2500 – 600 ml
Large (300 ml)1450 – 500 ml
Large (300 ml)2750 ml*
Recommended coffee milk jug sizes

* only recommended for powerful steam wands. Otherwise a better option is to heat the milk for each large mug separately.

Spout shape

Perhaps the most crucial factor when choosing the best milk pitcher latte art option is the shape of the spout.  There are generally two spout shapes, either a classic round spout or a sharp fluted shaped spout.

The classic round spout is wide, which allows the milk to flow at a faster rate.  A classic round spout will create thicker lines and is best for beginners learning shapes like hearts and tulips.

On the other hand, a sharp fluted spout has straight lines that taper out to a point and restricts the milk flow.

A sharp spout is best for creating finer, narrower lines, allowing for sharper, more intricate designs (like those seen in the world latte art championships), so it is ideal for those wanting to take their latte art to the next level.

While an experienced barista will be able to create beautiful designs with either type of spout, a beginner will find it easier using the classic round shaped spout.

Integrated thermometer

Another feature worth considering when you buy your milk jug is one with an integrated thermometer.

Usually, this will be in the form of a small strip down the side or at the bottom of the jug, so you can easily monitor the temperature of the milk as it heats.

This removes the need for a standalone milk thermometer and is a great option for beginners learning to master microfoam.

The integrated thermometers don’t tend to be as accurate as a milk thermometer, but they provide a streamlined and simple way of monitoring the milk temperature in the jug.

Jug handle comfort

The most common style of handle on a barista milk pitcher is one that is square in shape, allowing for plenty of room for your hand to grip the handle firmly.  This tends to give you good control over the jug when creating your latte art.

On the other hand, some people opt for an espresso milk jug without a handle, preferring to grip the jug itself while pouring the milk.

Some say this provides them with more control and precision when pouring from the spout.  In this case, it’s best to have a jug with a silicone sleeve to protect your hands from the heat while pouring the milk.

The style of jug handle really comes down to personal preference.

But, at the end of the day, you’ll want to choose a decent milk jug with a comfortable handle for you to hold and allows you the best control while creating your latte art.

Material

The best milk frother jug is made from high quality material, able to withstand high temperatures.

The material should also be able to assist in retaining the heat and keeping the milk at a consistent temperature while you pour and create your latte art.

Stainless steel is one of the most common materials for a milk jug.  Stainless steel is a quality material that will last for years and does a great job of retaining the hot temperature of the milk.

A downside with stainless steel, though is the surface is hot to touch when the milk has been steamed to the desired temperature.

For this reason, some people prefer to go for a milk jug with a Teflon coating to protect their fingers and hands from the hot temperatures.  Another option is to get a stainless steel jug with a silicone sleeve.

Colour

If you’re spending the time researching the best steaming pitcher for latte art, then it’s clear you enjoy brewing your coffee and appreciate quality coffee accessories.

So you might as well consider a really stylish latte steaming pitcher in a great colour.

While a sleek stainless steel pitcher in silver is the most common colour choice – it’s not the only choice.

Quality stainless steel jugs come in all kinds of colours like matte black, shiny red and even bright green!  So go and have some fun with your colour choice.

If you’re really looking to up your latte art game, then you need to take a look at the Motta Europa Milk Jug.

This highly rated milk jug is one of the most popular jugs currently on the Aussie market.  Made in Italy and developed with the Italian Barista Association, this jug is considered by many to be “the milk jug” – but with that prestigious title comes a hefty price tag too.

If you’re familiar with the classic style milk pitchers, you’ll immediately notice a difference with the Motta milk jug.  It has a much wider base and narrower top half, which is perfect for producing quality microfoam.

In addition, the unique style spout is ideal for precisely pouring milk and creating those intricate details for impressive latte art. However, the spout is not particularly sharp, so probably not suitable for expert baristas.

I like the 500ml capacity of this one, but it does come in a smaller 350ml and larger 750ml size to suit every household. This size is perfect to make enough frothed milk for a large mug of coffee, or two regular size coffees.

The milk jug Motta Europa is made with 18/10 stainless steel, so it is built to last.  The black and red industrial paint is food safe, but not recommended to put in the dishwasher.

Despite its quality materials, this metal milk jug is relatively lightweight, making it easy to hold when full, which is ideal for latte art creations.

What I like

  • Good design
  • Long 5 year warranty
  • Spout design helps improve latte art

What I don’t like

  • No volume measures on inside
  • Premium price point

The Motta Europa comes in a range of sizes and also comes in a choice of really funky and stylish colours like industrial black, red, white, orange and silver. It will look perfect alongside your espresso machine.
