When Is A Travel Coffee Machine Handy?

If you’re reading this guide, no doubt you’ve found yourself in plenty of situations where there was no coffee shop for miles and you wished you had a small portable coffee pot on hand so you could brew yourself a cuppa.

We mentioned going on holidays in the intro as being the prime example of when a portable coffee brewer comes in handy. But the reality is if you had one there are oodles of situations you could use it for.

Here are some situations where a portable all in one coffee maker would be perfect:

As mentioned holidays are the ideal time. You’re away from home and hotels and AirBnBs don’t always provide a coffee machine. A small travel coffee maker for hotel trips would be great.

Camping trips – with the best portable coffee maker for camping you’ll no longer have to endure instant coffee or the mediocre coffee the camp kiosk sells.

If the boss is too stingy to put a quality coffee machine in the office, then you can have great coffee all day long in the office.

Perhaps you’re always on the go for work, so having a portable coffee maker will mean you’ll never have to forgo a good cuppa again.

For backpacking or road trips, having your own coffee maker is the best start to the day.

Below I cover some considerations when choosing the best travel coffee machine, but if you know what you need, click here to skip straight to the reviews.

Things To Consider When Buying The Best Travel Coffee Maker

These days there are some excellent options on the market when it comes to the best compact coffee maker for travel.

However, in order to purchase something perfect for you, it is recommended that you consider the following factors.

Type of Coffee Maker

We all have our favourite coffee brewing method and you don’t need to settle even when it comes to a portable coffee maker.

No matter what your brewing method preference, there is the perfect type of coffee maker for you.

Let’s briefly look at the different types of portable coffee makers available:

Espresso

For those that want café / barista style coffee even while out and about you’ll want to look at a portable espresso coffee maker.

Similar to a full size espresso machine, the best travel espresso maker brews coffee by forcing a small amount of hot water through finely ground coffee.

While they won’t work as well as their full size counterparts – they do a pretty good job even with no electricity.

Immersion

An immersion brewer is great when away from home.  As the same suggests, an immersion brewer works by submerging the coffee grounds completely in water.

Once the coffee is ready, it is poured through a filter to remove the grounds from the coffee.

The downside with immersion brewers is they do tend to be a little on the large size in terms of portable coffee brewers.

French Press

Similar to an immersion brewer, a french press portable coffee maker has the coffee grounds totally submerged in the water.

The main difference is when the coffee is ready, the plunger is pushed through the coffee and the coffee is poured through the filter in the plunger to ensure the grounds don’t reach your mug.

French press coffee makers are great for car camping, caravans and RVs.

Capsule/Pod

Another great option for a travel coffee maker is a portable pod coffee machine.  In fact, some standard size pod machines are so small you could probably take them with you when you go away on holidays.

However, if you want something super compact, there are some great portable pod coffee maker options on the market.

Like their full size counterparts, a portable capsule coffee maker works by way of premade or reusable pods or capsules which are prefilled with just the right amount of ground coffee.

All you need to do is pop them into the machine, press a button or two and the machine takes care of the rest.

Stove Top

A stovetop coffee maker also called a Moka pot, is a method of brewing coffee on the stovetop.  The way a stovetop coffee maker works is by passing boiling water pressurised by steam through the ground coffee.

While there aren’t really any specific travel stovetop coffee makers around, a standard stovetop makes a good portable coffee maker. They are reasonably compact if you get a small one and they are lightweight too.

You’ll just need access to a stovetop though which is ideal if you’re camping or stay in self contained apartments or hotel rooms.

I have a Bialetti moka pot packed in my camper trailer and it is my go to camping coffee maker for road trips in the camper.

Cold Brew

There are cold brew coffee makers on the market, but most immersion or french press coffee plungers can work great for a cold brew coffee too.

Just use cold water instead of water and give the coffee grounds longer to brew.

Size

Just as when you buy a coffee maker for home, when you’re buying one for taking away with you, you’ll need to give some thought to how much coffee you plan on drinking at any given time.

Plus consider how many people are drinking coffee at the same time.

Most portable coffee makers just brew a single serve at the one time. However, it is possible to get larger portable coffee brewers.

Just keep in mind the larger it is, the more difficult it will be to pack. Often just going for a portable single serve coffee maker is best if you can accept you’ll need to brew coffee multiple times.  Alternatively buy each coffee drinker their own.

Weight

While the weight of a coffee maker is never usually that important it is super important when it comes to a travel coffee maker.

This is particularly true if you want to take your coffee maker on a plane with you.  Or even for those that want a portable coffee maker in their caravan or camper trailer and are limited by how much weight they can tow.

To help you make the best choice for you when it comes to choosing a portable travel coffee maker we’ve included the weights of each of the coffee makers reviewed in this guide in the table at the beginning of the article.

Method

As mentioned above, everyone has a preference when it comes to how they like their coffee brewed.  As you can see from the different types of portable coffee makers available, there really is no need to compromise when it comes to your brewing preference.

So if you like an espresso each morning to get you started – go for the best portable espresso machine.  Likewise, if you’re more of a drip coffee drinker – then look for the best compact drip coffee maker.

Ease to Clean

While having a coffee maker that is easy to clean is important at home, it’s even more critical while you’re away from your home.  Chances are you won’t have access to a dishwasher or any cleaning tools so the easier to clean the better.

Look for portable coffee makers with minimum parts, without any tiny crevices where grounds or coffee can get stuck and dishwasher safe parts are best.

Even if you don’t have a dishwasher while you’re away at least, you can still give it a proper clean in the dishwasher when you get home.

All the portable coffee brewers on our list are simple to rinse and clean on the go.

6. Bialetti Moka Express Review

Best Camp Coffee Maker

Bialetti 1164 Moka Express Coffee Maker, 4 Cup, Aluminum, CM435

Specifications

  • Dimensions: 15 x 20 x 25 cm
  • Weight: 580g
  • Coffee type: Espresso
  • Capacity: 4 cups

CHECK PRICE ON AMAZON

If you’re looking for a stovetop coffee maker for camping or for the times you have access to a stovetop in an apartment, then the Bialetti Moka Express is another one to consider.

While not as compact as some of the others listed in these reviews, the Bialetti is perfect when there are multiple coffee drinkers.

The Bialetti brews rich, authentic Italian espresso in minutes!  The way it works is you add water to the bottom section and then ground coffee to the filter in the middle.  Then put the unit on the stovetop.

Once the water starts to boil, the coffee will begin to move into the top pot.  Once the pot is full, give your coffee a quick stir before it is ready for drinking.

Of course, you will need access to a stovetop with the Bialetti – so do keep that in mind.

However, if you camp with a little stovetop or tend to stay in self contained hotel rooms, this shouldn’t be a problem. The standard Moka Express isn’t compatible with induction stovetops, but there are models that are compatible.

The good thing about the Bialetti is you can choose your size as it comes in a 2, 4, 6, 12 or 18 cup – although probably 4 or 6 is best for those after a portable coffee maker.

Made from aluminium, these coffee makers are lightweight and durable, so they are a good option for putting in your suitcase.  Plus they are easy to clean in hot soapy water.

Pros

  • Espresso like coffee strength
  • Robust and easy to clean

Cons

  • Heavier than other options
  • Requires a stovetop to work

Best for: While not necessarily designed to be a portable travel coffee maker, due to its lightweight and reasonably compact design, the Bialetti Moka Express is a great alternative when it comes to brewing coffee camping and on the go.

Made to make rich flavoured Italian espresso, with the Bialetti you certainly won’t be compromising on flavour while travelling and in my opinion it is the best camping coffee maker on our list.

This compact coffee brewer works with an interesting technique.  Simply fill the chamber with water, add the ground coffee to the basket and place inside letting the basket sink right to the bottom.

Then twist the ring at the top, which in turns creates a vacuum pressure which through a suction force, draws the water down through the grounds.

The end result is a full flavoured cuppa in just minutes. To drink your coffee, you just need to swap the brewing lid over for the drinking lid.  Your coffee will stay piping hot in the thermos for hours.  So no more cold wasted coffee with the Wacaco Pipamoka.

The Stanley Adventure All In One French Press is made from a quality 18/8 stainless steel pot and BPA free plastic plunger.  It has a locking handle that folds away for easy packing.

The plastic tube press has a double fine mesh filter that works well. The exterior steel compartment can actually be used as a pot too and you can boil water for your coffee directly in the pot.
